Itinerary
Day 1 - Depart USABoard your overnight flight (not included). Day 2 to Day 3 - Discovering London Welcome to London! Check in to your hotel, then relax or explore. In the morning, a half day sightseeing tour of London’s West End shows you Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, Trafalgar Square and Buckingham Palace. Your Tour Director is on hand today for help and advice. (Full Breakfast) Day 4 - London to Bruges and Brussels Transfer to Dover and set sail from the white cliffs over to France. Drive into Belgium for a stop in medieval Bruges. Stroll by canals and along cobbled streets to the Main Square, overlooked by the town belfry. Continue to Brussels, where you visit the Grand Place and cheeky Mannekin Pis statue. Tonight, join your fellow guests for a Welcome Reception with drinks and a light informal meal. (Continental Breakfast / Welcome Reception) Day 5 - Castles of the Rhine Valley and Heidelberg Travel into Germany to view the spires of Cologne Cathedral before continuing along the Rhine, via Bonn, to Boppard. Join a highlight cruise past medieval hill-top castles and steep leafy vineyards to the village of St. Goar, near the legendary Loreley Rock. Continue on to Heidelberg, to see the cliff top castle before arriving at your hotel. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner) Day 6 - Rothenburg and the Romantic Road to fun loving Munich Stop in medieval Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, still surrounded by its old walls and watch towers, frozen in time since the 16th Century. Continue along the Romantic Road to the Bavarian capital of Munich. See the Olympic Stadium, Ludwigstrasse, Marienplatz and soaring neogothic Town Hall. Tonight, maybe sample a stein of beer in a local beer hall? (Buffet Breakfast) Day 7 - Salzburg City of Mozart A short drive leads over the Austrian border to Salzburg, the city of Mozart and the sound of Music. Sightseeing with your local expert shows you the formal gardens of Mirabell Palace, the imposing fortress, cathedral and Mozart’s Birthplace in the lively Getreidegasse. (Buffet Breakfast) Day 8 to Day 9 - Venice and the Magic of La Serenissima Enjoy a morning at leisure to shop for the local marzipan specialties or seek out locations from the Sound of Music? Later enjoy stunning scenery as you drive down to the Carinthian Lake District. Cross the Italian border and descend to the romantic city of Venice where your prestigious hotel occupies an old convent building. Even for the experienced traveller, there can be no better joy than waking-up in Venice. Transfer to Giudecca Island to witness the skill of glassblowers and gondola builders. Then cruise by Palladio’s San Giorgio Maggiore to St. Mark’s Square. Alight to see Lord Byron’s Bridge of Sighs which connects the Doges’ Palace to the prisons. In the square, the bell tower comes into view, plus the beautiful mosaics of St. Mark’s Basilica and the Clock Tower Moors, who have been striking the hour for over 500 years. A visit to Venice would be incomplete without a gondola serenade. Glide along the atmospheric canals exploring the intimate and hidden parts of this unique city while musicians set the mood with traditional songs. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner / Buffet Breakfast) Day 10 to Day 11 - Papal and Imperial Rome Head south over the Apennine Mountains and follow the ‘Highway of the Sun’ to Rome. During your two night stay, join a local expert for a private tour of the priceless art of the Vatican Museums and the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel. Your VIP visit includes fast-track entry and behind the scenes access to the Bramante Staircase, a part of the Vatican closed to the general public. Then explore St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the largest churches in the world. Cross the Tiber to visit the mighty Colosseum and look out over the Roman Forum. The afternoon is at leisure. (Buffet Breakfast / Buffet Breakfast) Day 12 - Exploring Renaissance Florence Drive to the Chianti Hills and the city of Florence. A local expert accompanies you to Michelangelo’s statue of ‘David’ in the Academy Gallery and on to the Duomo, where the Gates of Paradise adorn the Baptistery. Continue to Signoria Square lined with fountains and statues. In the area around Santa Croce Basilica, view a demonstration of traditional leather work. Afterwards there is time to shop. (Buffet Breakfast) Day 13 to Day 14 - Lucerne's Lions and Dragons Journey north past the Italian Lake District to the Swiss border. Take the St. Gotthard route and enjoy Alpine scenery all the way to Lucerne. In the morning, view what Mark Twain described as “the saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world”, Lucerne’s emotive Lion Monument. See the covered Chapel Bridge and the Jesuit Church, then enjoy a Premium Highlight ascent of a Swiss mountain by cog-wheel train. In medieval times, it was believed that dragons lived in these rugged clefts. From the summit, admire some of the best possible views of the snow-covered Alps. Tonight, enjoy a Dine-Around evening which offers a choice of dining experiences, atmosphere and cuisine. (Buffet Breakfast / Buffet Breakfast / Dine Around) Day 15 to Day 16 - Paris the City of Lights Drive to Basel before crossing the Rhine to enter France. Travel through the wine-growing Burgundy region to Paris. Tonight head for the Latin Quarter, famous for its Sorbonne university and Boulevards St Michel and St Germain where you enjoy a ‘diner de célébration’ served with wine in a typical Parisian bistro. In the morning, sightseeing with a local expert takes you by Notre Dame Cathedral, the imposing façades of the Louvre and Garnier’s Opera House. See the obelisk in the centre of the Place de la Concorde and drive along the Champs Élysées to the Arc de Triomphe. Now survey the city from the heights of the Eiffel Tower, built for the World’s Exhibition of 1889. The afternoon is at leisure for shopping or your own pursuits. (Buffet Breakfast / Celebration Dinner / Buffet Breakfast) Day 17 - Return to USA Your coach calls in at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport at 08:00 this morning. (Buffet Breakfast)
