Itinerary
Day 1 - Depart USABoard your overnight flight (not included). Day 2 to Day 3 - Fun Loving Munich, and the Jewels of the Bavarian Alps Welcome to Bavaria! Airport transfers leave Munich Airport for the tour hotel at 10:00 & 13:00. Later an orientation tour shows you the Feldherrnhalle in the Odeonsplatz, the Palace of the Dukes of Wittelsbach, English Garden, Hofbräuhaus, St Peter’s Church and famous Marienplatz. Tonight, get together with your Tour Director for a Welcome reception, drinks and a light meal. The following day is devoted to the beautiful mountain scenery of the German Alps! First to Oberammergau, home since 1634 of the Passion Play; see the immense theatre and colourful chalets. Continue along the German Alpine Road to the Wieskirche, a masterpiece of Bavarian rococo. View King Ludwig’s castle of Hohenschwangau before visiting his ultimate folly Neuschwanstein. Return to Munich where you are at leisure. (Welcome Reception / Buffet Breakfast) Day 4 - Berchtesgaden and Salzburg, City of Mozart Ascend to the resort of Berchtesgaden in the shadow of Hitler’s infamous ‘Eagle’s Nest’. A short drive over the Austrian border leads to Salzburg, ‘alive with the sound of music’. Sightseeing with a local expert shows you the formal gardens of Mirabell Palace, the imposing fortress, the cathedral in the Old Town and Mozart’s Birthplace. (Buffet Breakfast) Day 5 to Day 6 - The Blue Danube, Stately Vienna and the Habsburgs First stop this morning is Mondsee to see the ‘Sound of Music’ church. Then in the shadow of the great Monastery of Melk, join a scenic cruise along the River Danube through the Wachau Valley, where vineyards cover hillsides overlooked by ruined castles. Alight in Dürnstein, a medieval gem of towers and ramparts. Finally head for Austria’s great Imperial capital, Vienna. Tonight, for your dining pleasure, enjoy a range of cuisine from a selection of restaurants. In the morning, join a local expert at Schönbrunn Palace, full of frescoed ceilings, crystal chandeliers, mirrors and gilded ornaments. Spend some time in the formal gardens before going on to view St Charles’ Church, the Hofburg Palace, Parliament and State Opera House. The afternoon is all yours to explore the city at your leisure. (Buffet Breakfast / Dine Around / Buffet Breakfast) Day 7 - St Veit an der Glan, City of Flowers Take a delightful drive through ‘undiscovered’ Austria – the pine forests and sleepy towns of Styria and Carinthia. Climb the dramatic Semmering Pass and stop in Kindberg with its colourful maypole. Continue to Friesach, still encircled by its moat. Stay tonight in St Veit an der Glan, former seat of the Dukes of Carinthia. The old town square with its graceful Town Hall and Plague Column, is where the local passion for flowers reaches its peak. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner) Day 8 - The Dolomites and Innsbruck, the mountainringed capital of Tyrol Head for the distinctive rugged peaks of the Dolomites. Enter Italy by way of Lago di Misurina and the Tre Croci Pass to pause in the fashionable ski resort of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Cross back into Austria and continue to Innsbruck, set in a valley of snow-capped mountain peaks. Relax among the cafés of the Old Quarter, with its narrow arcades and gabled shop fronts. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner) Day 9 to Day 10 - Along the Engadine to St Moritz On this morning’s orientation tour see the Triumph Arch, the lovely Golden Roof of Emperor Maximilian and the Royal Palace. Then enter Switzerland and drive along the beautiful Engadine Valley for two nights in the chic Alpine resort of St Moritz. Enjoy quality time here to enjoy the marvellous scenery and fresh air - perhaps take a horse-drawn carriage ride to the foot of a nearby glacier or browse in the elegant boutiques? Another option is a ride aboard the Bernina Express - one of Europe’s outstanding train journeys. To help you make the most of your stay, Insight has arranged a mountain railways pass providing free travel on all cable cars, funiculars and chairlifts in Engadin St. Moritz. Enjoy! (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner / Buffet Breakfast) Day 11 to Day 12 - All aboard the Glacier Express amd on to lake side Lucerne An unforgettable journey begins the day as ice-capped mountains, stone-built villages and lush meadows slip by the windows of your Glacier Express train. Ascend through the spiral tunnels of the Albula Pass and cross the Landwasser Viaduct before heading down through the Oberalp Valley to rejoin the coach at Andermatt. Continue north to lovely Lucerne, one of Europe’s most popular cities. Join your Tour Director to see the sorrowful sculpture of the dying lion, hewn out of a limestone cliff to commemorate those Swiss Guards who died at the Battle of the Tuileries. The following day is completely at leisure in this beautiful city with its 14th century, covered wooden bridges, painted gables, old walls and watch towers of the medieval fortifications. Stroll across the Chapel Bridge to the Jesuit Church, or use your free time to shop. Why not cruise the tranquil waters of Lake Lucerne and enjoy the stunning scenery? Later embark on a spectacular funicular and cable-car ride up into the mountains, for magnificent snow-capped views. On top of Stanserhorn, amid true Alpine majesty, your journey literally peaks with a farewell Celebration Dinner and wine in the revolving restaurant. (Buffet Breakfast / Buffet Breakfast / Celebration Dinner) Day 13 - Return to USA Your departure transfer arrives at Zurich Airport at 08:00. Please do not schedule any flights before 10:00am.
