On arrival at Charles de Gaulle Airport, your airport transfers leave for the tour hotel at 08:30, 11:00 & 13:30. After checking-in, the capital’s grand boulevards and world famous landmarks are yours to explore. Later, meet your Tour Director for a Welcome Reception and light informal meal, followed by a sparkling illuminations tour of the capital – the perfect introduction to the ‘city of light’. (Welcome Reception) Day 3 - Royal Reims and Champagne Country Follow the Marne Valley eastwards to Reims, important in French history as the coronation place of generations of monarchs. Enjoy an orientation tour showing you the Gothic cathedral, one of the finest in France with its spectacular facade and glorious rose windows. After some free time to explore, embark on a beautiful drive through the leafy vineyards to Epernay, internationally renowned as the epicentre of France’s most famous export. All is revealed on your visit to one of the great Champagne houses. Descend into a network of tunnels where the bottles of bubbly are slowly aged. Discover for yourself the secrets of ‘methode champenoise’ and taste what Dom Pérignon likened to ‘drinking the stars’. Experience the French way of life tonight as you settle in to your peaceful countryside hotel, nestled in the heart of the Champagne vineyards. (Buffet Breakfast / Dinner) Day 4 to Day 5 - Verdun and Strasbourg, City at the Crossroads Make a poignant stop at Verdun this morning, site of the heroic French stand in the First World War. See the ossuary and memorial tower that overlooks 15000 war graves. From here take the Voie Sacrée , the main supply artery used by the French Army during the Battle of Verdun. Continue through the rugged forms of the wild Vosges Mountains to the Alsace region; bordered by the Rhine, it has changed nationality four times in just over one hundred years. Tonight, in the regional capital of Strasbourg, you have the choice of a number of great restaurants for your dining pleasure. Situated halfway between Prague and Paris, Strasbourg is rightly named the ‘city at the crossroads’. It’s also the official seat of the European Parliament and you see the futuristic buildings on your morning guided tour. In contrast, stroll the tranquil waterways of Petite France where craftsmen’s houses were built directly above the channels of the River Ill. Admire also the wonderful Gothic cathedral with its astronomical clock. Now you are at leisure to enjoy the city at your own pace. Maybe take the ‘wine-road’ into the Alsace countryside this afternoon to see the fine vineyards, beautiful half-timbered houses decked with geraniums and perhaps a stork for which the province is famous. (Buffet Breakfast / Dine Around / Buffet Breakfast) Day 6 to Day 7 - Burgundy, Beaune and the Dukes of Dijon Stop in Colmar this morning, possibly the prettiest city in France! Discover why on your orientation tour through the Old Town and little Venice. There is time to wander down the Rue des Marchands and Rue Merciére where there are many picturesque old houses. Continue alongside the forested ridges of the Jura Mountains into Burgundy. This afternoon is dedicated to the nearby town of Beaune with its town ramparts, historical mansions, half-timbered houses, flowered squares and gardens. The town’s most famous medieval treasure is the Hospices de Beaune, and you visit its inner courtyard to admire the colourful geometric tiled roof. Then a scenic drive through the prestigious Cote d’Or, where every village sign reads like a wine list, brings you to Dijon. The Burgundian capital has many handsome buildings recalling the time when the Duchy of Burgundy was more powerful than the Kings of France. In the morning, a sightseeing tour shows you the picturesque mansions in the Rue des Forges, Notre-Dame, Dijon’s most famous church and includes a visit to the ancient Palais des Ducs, former seat of the powerful Dukes of Burgundy. The rest of the day is yours to do as you please! Dijon has a fine reputation as the home of haute cuisine, so this evening, savour the wine and flavours of this rich region at a grande finalé Celebration Dinner. (Buffet Breakfast / Buffet Breakfast / Celebration Dinner) Day 8 - Paris, Romantic Capital on the Seine Cross the great agricultural lands of France, and through the impressive Forest of Fontainebleau to return to the French capital. On arrival, a relaxing Seine River cruise through the heart of the city provides a unique insight into Paris. The rest of the day is at leisure to visit the museums, hit the famous department stores or just spend a pleasant half hour watching the passers-by from a Parisian café. Tonight, perhaps round off the tour with dinner at a typical Parisian cabaret? (Buffet Breakfast) Day 9 - Return to USA Your tour concludes after breakfast.
