Itinerary
Day 1 Playa del CarmenEnjoy beachside paradise on the Caribbean coast or take an optional visit to the nearby island of Cozumel. Days 2-3 Tulum Peruse ancient Mayan architecture at the spectacular seaside ruins in Tulum. Continue with the laissez-faire approach on Tulum's beautiful white sand beaches. Days 4-5 Caye Caulker Journey south to Belize and explore colourful underwater worlds off the island of Caye Caulker, home to some of the region's best scuba diving. Belize does beach culture exceptionally well - as will be discovered in this idyllic spot. Days 6-7 San Ignacio Travel through the forested highlands to San Ignacio. Perhaps see the caves of Actun Tunichil Muknal, where ancient Mayan relics and crystallised skeletons lie hidden. Maybe hire a canoe, go tubing, wallow beneath waterfalls or potter about in San Ignacio town. Days 8-9 Flores/ Tikal It's hard to resist the charm of cobblestone streets, colourful houses and the relaxed pace of Flores. Don't miss the opportunity to spend an optional day discovering the jungle ruins and limestone temples at some of the most impressive of Guatemala's ruins. Learning the history of icons like the temple at Tikal on a guided tour is highly recommended. Days 10-11 Rio Dulce Find a quiet spot to relax on the shores of Lake Izabal. Opt to head upriver to the thermal springs, or saddle-up for a horse ride through nearby rubber plantations. Day 12 Antigua Visit Antigua and stroll along the lively cobblestone streets that simply exude charisma. Chow down on some tasty tamales in the market or try a local three-meat concoction known as pepian. Days 13-14 San Jorge La Laguna/ Chichicastenango Get an up close look at Guatemalan life as guests of a family in San Jorge. Practice some Spanglish with inquisitive kids. Days 15-16 Antigua Travel back to picturesque Antigua and enjoy the vista of surrounding volcanoes. Perhaps take to the floorboards in a salsa lesson! Days 17-18 Copan Cross the wild countryside to Copan in Honduras. Take an optional trip to the Mayan ruins and walk through the grassy plazas under the gaze of huge carved faces, staring out from ancient walls. Days 19-21 Roatan Island Catch a ferry from La Ceiba to Honduras's Roatan Island, and spend two days chilling out on the beach or scuba diving in Caribbean waters. Day 22 Comayagua The historic centre of Comayagua is one of more charming major cities in Honduras, and a great place to witness colonial architecture meeting modern day life. Days 23-24 Granada Skip across the border into Nicaragua and arrive in the city of Granada. Surrounded by volcanoes and located on the shores of Lake Nicaragua, this is the country's oldest city. Wandering about and sightseeing in Granada is a fine way to spend an afternoon. Days 25-26 Ometepe Island Head across Lake Nicaragua to the twin-volcanic island of Ometepe. Take an optional hike up Concepcion Volcano, cool off in a jungle swimming hole or spot brightly-coloured wildlife who call Ometepe Island home. Days 27-28 Monteverde Arriving in Costa Rica, explore the lush Monteverde cloud forest on foot or perhaps adopt a faster pace and hop on a mountain bike. A Monteverde canopy or zip line tour is also a great way to explore the area. Days 29-30 La Fortuna/ Arenal Volcano National Park Travel to quirky La Fortuna and witness bright-orange lava flowing from Arenal Volcano, a sight that is all the more stunning on an optional night hike. Relax under cascading La Fortuna Waterfall or ease tired muscles in the hot springs. Days 31-32 San Jose Bid farewell to Central America by dancing the night away with the Ticos (Costa Rican natives) of San Jose.
