Day 2 – Whale Watching + Provincetown
Having sailed across Massachusetts Bay, you’ll step off the Victory II this morning in Provincetown to board a Dolphin Fleet vessel, specially designed for comfort and whale watching in the deep waters of the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. With our engaging onboard naturalists, this expedition offers a chance to see and learn about the rich marine life of the Sanctuary – including Humpback whales and a variety of pelagic bird species that can only be viewed off shore. In the afternoon, our Trolley Tour of Provincetown includes the local museum which houses the Mayflower Compact and other historic treasures. Visiting the beautiful Cape Code National Seashore and free time to explore the boutiques and galleries of Provincetown complete our first day ashore. (B+L+D)
Day 3 – Historic Newport, Rhode Island
Step into America’s Gilded Age as you discover the elaborate architecture and grand style of Newport’s National Historic Landmarks. Our sightseeing begins this morning at The Breakers, considered by many to be the grandest of Newport’s many mansions. Designed in 1893 by Richard Morris Hunt, this Renaissance-style palazzo was the home of the Vanderbilt family for more than half a century. We’ll also tour The Elms, a late 19th-century mansion inspired by the Château d’Asnières outside of Paris. After lunch, the afternoon is yours to relax onboard ship or to explore Newport’s historic waterfront at your own pace. (B+L+D)
Day 4 – Martha’s Vineyard
With its timeless fishing villages, historic lighthouses and wealth of picturesque gingerbread cottages, Martha’s Vineyard is an idyllic island retreat – unconnected to the mainland by tunnel or bridge. This morning’s tour brings us first to Oak Bluffs, a tranquil community of Victorian-style residences, and then onward to Vineyard Haven, famed for its beautiful harbor and lighthouse. Traveling across the island, we’ll explore historic farming towns and see the 1799 Gay Head Lighthouse and spectacular Aquinnah Cliffs, carved by glaciers millions of years ago. Enjoy a light luncheon of local chowder, salad and freshly-baked breads before returning to ship. In the afternoon, a complimentary shuttle can take you to Edgartown to explore on your own. Once a wealthy whaling port, the streets of this charming coastal community are still lined with the 18th and 19th-century homes of these sea captains of old. (B+L+D)
Day 5 – Portland, Maine
This morning’s tour of Portland takes us through the elegant Victorian Mansion district, past the boyhood home of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and other fine residences built by wealthy seafaring merchants and captains. Continuing along the ruggedly beautiful southern shores of Casco Bay, we’ll see the Portland Head Light, Maine’s oldest lighthouse. After lunch onboard, we’ll visit Kennebunkport, a still-thriving community that traces its history to the 1600’s when it was a shipbuilding center known for its skillfully constructed 5-masted schooners. In nearby Kennebunk, we’ll discover an impressive ensemble of historic homes and tour the lovely English-style gardens and riverside woodlands of St. Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery Estate. (B+L+D)
Day 6 – Bar Harbor + Acadia National Park, Maine
Setting out from the charming port of Bar Harbor, our destination this morning is Acadia National Park. Created from land donated by early 20th-century visionaries who sought to preserve the region’s inspiring natural beauty, Acadia was the first national park established in the eastern half of the country. Exploring its granite peaks, sheltered coves, rocky coasts and deep forests, our tour will take you from the quiet beauty of Sand Beach and up Cadillac Mountain for sweeping views of Frenchman Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. At the famed Thunder Hole, you’ll discover a natural rock inlet where incoming waves often hit with a thunderous boom and soaring spray. Our sightseeing ends at the Abbe Museum – a Smithsonian affiliate dedicated to the history and cultures of Maine’s indigenous people. After lunch in Bar Harbor, you can return to ship or explore on your own in this inviting coastal community. (B+L+D)
Day 7 – Scenic Sailing along the North Atlantic Coast
A delightful day at sea unfolds as we follow in the wake of the trawlers who sail from their home ports in northern New England on their way to the fishing grounds of the North Atlantic. As we navigate past the mouth of the Bay of Fundy and turn northward to hug the coast of Nova Scotia, our shipboard experts will be on-hand to enlighten you about the region’s rich maritime history and remote coastal towns. Fine dining with free-flowing wine, time to engage with your fellow passengers, and our Open Bar enhance the voyage. (B+L+D)
Day 8 – Disembark in Halifax, Nova Scotia
Upon disembarking the mv Victory II here in Halifax, you’ll be chauffeured to the airport for your homeward flight. (B)
