Day 2, Cape Town
Get ready for an adrenaline-charged day on Table Mountain. For the epitome of breathtaking views, hike the Platteklip Gorge to the top of Table Mountain; then rappel down the steep slope looking out over the city, Table Bay and Robben Island. Feel the charge of completing “the world’s highest commercial abseil.” Come down to earth for an afternoon exhilarating as you please. (B)
Day 3, Cape Town
With images of “Jaws” sparking your imagination, set out for a boat ride to Dyer Island in search of sharks. Work up your courage and descend in a reinforced cage beneath the sea to safely watch the menacing prehistoric fish. Your expert guide promises “this will be one of the most adrenaline-charging adventure activities you will ever live to remember.” The sharks are very curious and often come close to the cage to look at the diver. But, “Not to worry, they never attack the cage.” Tonight, walk Cape Town’s bustling waterfront neighborhoods and watch the harbor lights come alive at dusk. (BL)
Day 4, Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe
Take flight to Victoria Falls for three days soaking up the world’s largest curtain of falling water, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Zambezi National Park. Before the sun sets, embark on a cruise down the Zambezi River. Board the classic teak Ra-Ikane, named for David Livingstone’s guide, and sip a Sundowner or two as you watch for elephants, hippos and crocodiles along the river banks. (B)
Day 5, Victoria Falls
Kick off your day with a game drive on your way to Zambezi National Park for some adventurous canoeing. After your qualified guide provides a thorough safety briefing and instruction, paddle down river, running small rapids, exploring channels looking for birds and other wildlife. Lunch and cold beer await you at your disembarkation point some ten miles downstream. Return to your lodge for an afternoon poolside. (B)
Day 6, Victoria Falls
Today’s immersion in Victoria Falls starts with a guided walk along the misty overlooks to watch for rainbows and marvel at over 100 million gallons of water per minute crashing through the channels. Then, head into Zambezi National Park for a full menu of thrilling rides. Look straight down on the river’s turbulent rapids as you zipline through the forest canopy along the Batoka Gorges, reaching over 65 miles per hour. Harness into a gigantic swing for a wild ride 300 feet above the river. Or try the Flying Fox – just take “a running jump into thin air over the gorge.” Even tonight’s dinner at your lodge will be adventurous. Specializing in traditional Zimbabwean dishes and renowned for its warthog fillet, t he Boma feast will sate you with a four-course barbecue feast - the Mopani worms are optional. Get into the rhythm of the bush with performances by Amakwezi dancers and join in the drumming circle.
Day 7, Hwange National Park
Leave behind the roar of the falls as your driver transports you to your safari in “the land of the giants.” That’s Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s largest game reserve, known for its huge herds of elephants. Enjoy the old-fashioned African charm and elegance at your authentic bush camp, situated on an acacia island with sweeping views of the savannah. The wide and well-trodden elephant paths through the grounds mean you won’t have to look far to spot the massive mammals. (BLD)
Day 8, Hwange National Park
Wake up with the wildlife to join your expert ranger for a game drive in an open-air safari vehicle for the chance to spot some of the one hundred different species of mammal. Catch the soft morning light for brilliant photographs of the grazing buffalo and giraffe and the more uncommon gemsbok, roan antelope and white rhino. After sipping sundowners at the hide, join an evening game drive when your ranger spotlights the nocturnal animals in action. (BLD)
Day 9, Hwange National Park
Begin the day with a game drive to explore Kennedy Vlei, blanketed with seasonal wild flowers after the rains, and a haven for large herds of buffalo and zebra after its lush grasses dry out. Relax over a leisurely lunch and dip in the plunge pool; as the sun cools down, join a walking safari with your ranger and tuck into various viewing hides to look out for kudu, sable antelope, zebra and wildebeest. Birdwatchers will be hooked into counting off how many of the park’s 400 species of birds they can spot. Tonight, toast your adventures in the wild over a delicious dinner with wine. (BLD)
Day 10, Johannesburg / Depart
Soak up the pink glow of sunrise and your last hours in the bush before returning to Victoria Falls Airport for your flight to Johannesburg and your onward travel arrangements. (B)
