Middle East tours typically visit Israel, Jordan or Turkey, in a region often referred to as the Holy Land. Escorted Holy Land tours include the services of an expert guide who knows the area well. Holy Land tours feature a number of historically and spiritually significant destinations. Jerusalem, Nazareth and Bethlehem are prevalent stops in Israel. Jerusalem's Israel Museum and its Shrine of the Book, which holds the Dead Sea Scrolls, are among the highlights. Other lures of Holy Land travel include Nazareth's Church of Annunciation and Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity.
Holy Land tours also visit Jordan or Turkey. In Jordan, Holy Land tours might stop in Petra, with its 12th-century crusader fortresses, ancient tombs and Roman amphitheater. Holy Land trips to Jordan may include one of the world's most famous buildings, the Petra Treasury, which is carved into a wall of rock and shines with a red-orange radiance. Middle East travel to Turkey will likely include Istanbul, the present-day name for the ancient city of Constantinople. Turkey, with its complex and turbulent history, will complete any Middle East travel itinerary.
