Itinerary
Day 1 Rome
Of all the cities in Italy, Rome poses an aura and energy that is simply impossible to resist. Between exploring the Colosseum, marvelling at the gilded tombs of St Peter's Basilica and walking through atmospheric piazzas, travellers will be enchanted by Rome.
Days 2-5 Lucca/ Pisa/ Florence
See the landscape transform from Romanesque cities to rolling hills and olive groves on a train journey to Tuscany. Cycle alongside the scenic Serchio River, glimpse Michelangelo's David on a visit to Florence, marvel at the La Torre de Pisa, then head back to cosy apartments in lovely Lucca.
Days 6-7 Cinque Terre
Weave through the charming, hillside villages of the Cinque Terre, taking the stunning, coastal path above the sea. Perhaps even cool off with a dip in the azure waters below.
Days 8-9 Milan/ Stresa
Stroll through the ever-fashionable Milan and marvel at its magnificent Duomo. Travel by train to pristine Stressa, which boasts magnificent views of the Alps. Board a ferry and explore the beautiful Borromean Islands - perhaps take in the hanging gardens of the romantic palatial residence on the shores of serene Lake Maggiore.
Days 10-11 Lucerne
Farewell Italy and travel into idyllic, lush Switzerland. Enjoy a boat tour of placid Lake Lucerne, learn the story behind the emotive Lion Monument or take a ride on the world's steepest cogwheel railway to the summit of Mt Pilatus.
Days 12-14 Swiss Alps
Visit the spectacular Trummelbach Falls while taking in crisp alpine air. Be sure to try traditional Swiss treats such as fondue and rosti. Perhaps head to the peak of the Schilthorn for a James Bond experience.
Days 15-16 Bern/ Dijon/ Beaune
Travel through the Swiss capital of Bern and cross the border into Dijon, France. Embark on an odyssey of indulgence in a region renowned for its boeuf bourguignon and mustard. A day trip to Beaune, where Burgundy's best wines are produced, is a tempting introduction to the Cote d'Or.
Days 17-18 Reims
Raise a glass to a city renowned for its bubbles and royal ties. Visit champagne caves for an insight into the drink's effervescent magic.
Days 19-22 Paris
Stroll along the Seine and be enchanted by Paris, a city that has inspired artists and lovers throughout the ages. There is plenty of time to explore and discover the myriad of tourist attractions in Paris, so perhaps wander the art-filled corridors of the Louvre or visit Sacre Coeur in vibrant Montmartre. Indulge in fine French cuisine before saying 'au revoir' to this romantic destination.
Days 23-24 Tours
Travel to the Loire Valley, a region renowned for its art, history and medieval houses. Cycle to the chateau at Villandry and enjoy its manicured Renaissance gardens.
Days 25-26 Dordogne Region
Travel by train into the Dordogne region and soak up its relaxed pace. Explore the striking limestone scenery of the Dordogne River, visiting sights like the towering Chateau de Beynac on a kayaking excursion. In the evening, why not indulge in a decadent degustation meal in a local restaurant.
Day 27-28 Bordeaux
Step back in time in the World Heritage-listed Old Town of Bordeaux. France's internationally acclaimed wine region is a food and wine lover's heaven, so treat taste buds to full-bodied local blends paired with mouth-watering French fare. If feeling energetic, be sure to clamber up the 243 steps of Saint-Michel Basilica's tower.
Days 29-30 Pyrenees
Hike in the spectacular Pyrenees Mountains to take in crisp air and breathtaking views.
Days 31-32 San Sebastian
Travel to Spain and make tracks for sunny San Sebastian. Walk up Mt Urgull for fantastic views over the town. Enjoy the sun at La Concha before heading to the Parte Vieja, which apparently boasts the most bars per square metre in all of Spain.
Days 33-34 Segovia
Visit Alcazar, a fairytale castle perched on a cliff. With turrets galore, this medieval royal residence will surely enchant.
Days 35-36 Madrid
Between stunning architecture, superb museums and spectacular nightlife, the Spanish capital city Madrid is a heady experience. See the masterpieces in the Museo del Prado or visit Reina Sofia to view the Picasso and Miro exhibitions.
Day 37 Salamanca
Head west to the university city of Salamanca. Soak up the student vibe on a stroll through Plaza Mayor and past historic stone buildings.
Days 38-39 Coimbra
Travel from Spain to Portugal to sample rich red wines, delicious spicy fare and enjoy the local tradition of Fado - soulful music about love.
Days 40-41 Lisbon
Start explorations of Lisbon with its towering medieval citadel and many interesting museums - or check out the nightlife in Barrio Alto.
Days 42-43 The Algarve
There's plenty of time to relax on the beach, explore hidden coves and soak up the holiday atmosphere of the Algarve.
Day 44 Jerez
Visit Jerez and discover the secrets to a perfect aperitif on a bodega tour or enjoy a tipple of sherry - the drink named after this town.
Days 45-46 Chefchaouen
Travel across the Strait of Gibraltar and explore Chefchaouen, a sleepy mountain town of delightful blue-washed buildings.
Days 47-48 Fes
Arrive in the city of Fes and step back in time into a huge medieval medina thick with exotic smells, tastes, sights and sounds. Fuel explorations of this imperial city with a glass of mint tea and some sweet Moroccan dates. After time spent sightseeing in Fes, be sure to unwind with an evening drink at the Palais Jamai while the haunting call to prayer floats over the city.
Days 49-50 Marrakech
Find everything from genie lamps to leather slippers in Marrakech, an exotic city of souqs. Take a refreshing walk through the lush gardens at Majorelle Jardin, visit the lavishly decorated Saadian Tombs or end the adventure among the bustle of Djemaa el-Fna, Marrakech's bustling main bazaar.
