DAY 1 Spend a golden day in San José
Tour begins: 2:00 PM at Hôtel Le Bergerac, San José. Touch down in San José, gateway to a treasure trove of riches, past and present. Meet your Culturious representative at the airport for a transfer to Hôtel Le Bergerac, an elegant, intimate boutique hotel graced with tropical gardens in the old embassy district of Los Yoses. History calls this afternoon on a guided walking tour through the old city center. Go for Baroque at the architecturally resplendent Teatro Nacional and go for the gold at the Museo del Oro, where everything is truly golden. It’s fiesta time tonight at our welcome dinner, enticing with a taste of Latin American fare. Buenas noches! (D)

DAY 2 A hike in the clouds, a taste of chocolate & on to Turrialba
Drive from San José to the eastern edge of Valle Central and a guided hike in a cloud forest, the ideal habitat for a diverse variety of flora and fauna. Then learn how chocolate farming has helped sustain Costa Rica’s ecological footprint and economic foothold from the master chocolatiers at the Sibú Chocolate artisan workshop in San Isidro; sample their handiwork on a tasting tour, and enjoy lunch in a lush garden setting. Continue on to the Turrialba agricultural region and another gracious Culturious resort from which paradise calls; understated and low-key to blend right in with the tropically elegant environment, your home for the next three nights at Casa Turire is tranquility perfected! (B, L, D)

DAY 3 Saddle up for a hacienda trail ride
As your most Culturious of Costa Rica vacations continues, saddle up for a trail ride* on horseback through forests, sugar cane and coffee fields on a 70-acre hacienda; weather permitting, take in amazing views of Angostura Lake as well as Turrialba and Irazú volcanoes. After a barbecue lunch, learn all about the agricultural techniques of a working sugar cane and macadamia nut ranch this afternoon. Spend the evening as you please; enjoy an included dinner at your resort, where the pleasure is ours! (B, L, D)

DAY 4 Whitewater fun on the Rio Pejibaye & more
Costa Rica's Rio Pejibaye thunders and whispers through wildlife-rich rainforests, carrying river runners of all abilities along its churning waters. Today's approximately 3-hour whitewater adventure challenges the Culturious (take part or take a pass; this is your vacation!) as we conquer up to Class III-level rapids with surprising agility; you will get wet but that's all part of the fun! Dry off at a picnic lunch along the banks before returning to Casa Turire for an afternoon spent at leisure enjoying a range of resort activities from a dip in the pool or jacuzzi to kayaking on a mirror-still lake, biking, horseback riding, carriage tours or bird watching (some of which require an additional charge). Whatever you choose to do, make sure you're back in time for our special party at a nearby hacienda, another highlight of this most remarkable of Costa Rica vacations. Mucho gusto! (B, L, D)

DAY 5 From the jungle at Guacalillo to the sea in Tambor
It’s up early for a drive through small villages, sugar cane fields and coffee plantations to the Guacalillo Estuary, whose mangrove forests are home to an array of birds including the flycatcher, cuckoo, egret, vireo, hummingbird, heron and especially the endangered Scarlet Macaw, whose conservation is key in the particular forest you’ll explore as you cruise through the mangroves with our local guide. Keep your eyes peeled for cormorants, crocodiles, ospreys, iguanas and other species as you explore the mouth of the Tárcoles River. Enjoy a typical Costa Rican lunch complete with marimba music, then cross the Gulf of Nicoya by boat for a three-night stay at Tango Mar, your Pacific Ocean resort in Tambor on the Nicoya Peninsula.  Join your Tauck Director for an introductory Spanish lesson tonight. (B, L, D)

DAY 6 Soaring through a natural heaven on the Nicoya Peninsula
Everywhere you look, from your oceanfront resort in Tambor on the Nicoya Peninsula to the rainforests surrounding it, nature beckons. Experience it on an exhilarating zip line ride as you streak through the treetops of the jungle canopy over the Montezuma River. Feel it in the refreshing waters of a cascading waterfall, the perfect place to cool off. Taste it in the local cuisine of a beachside resort town during lunch on your own, and savor it this afternoon at leisure, when you are free to do as you please. And celebrate it tonight at our private oceanfront party at Tango Mar, where you'll kick off your shoes for cocktails on the beach – and perhaps a taste of guaro, Costa Rica's potent national drink – lively salsa music and a private dinner at the Rancho, promising an evening of fun for everyone.

DAY 7 Kayaking into the mangrove forests of the Curu Reserve
Birders be aware that early risers catch the best birds here in Costa Rica... so if you’re game, join us for bird watching this morning before breakfast. Meet your Culturious compas for a gentle kayak cruise with your experienced naturalist guide into the wildlife-rich mangrove estuaries of the Curu Reserve, alive with a chorus of tropical bird songs, as this most Culturious of Costa Rica vacations continues. Lunch on regional specialties for a true taste of local culture, and if you hunger for the inside scoop on traditional Costa Rican fare, join us for a cooking demonstration this afternoon -- and enjoy local specialties for dinner tonight. (B, L, D)

DAY 8 Pura vida Costa Rica
This most exciting of Culturious Costa Rica vacations ends in San José. Depart Tango Mar resort this morning for a short scenic flight from the Tambor airstrip to the airport in San José for your return flight home; you can fly home anytime after 12:00 noon today. Allow a minimum of three hours for flight check-in. The extra-Culturious may choose to stay on in San José; ask us about extending your stay! Note: Costa Rica departure tax is not included. (B)
