A trip in search of the elusive northern lights, or aurora borealis, is a journey like no other. The North's perpetual sunlight in summer hides the show, but its long winter nights and snow-covered landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for dancing greens, blues and reds that illuminate the sky. Though sightings are never guaranteed, the aurora can be seen all around the far north of the world, from Scandinavia and Russia to Alaska and Canada, and is most visible from September through March.
