For 16 days each year from late September through early October, Munich opens its arms to visitors at the world's largest festival, Oktoberfest. Guests on opening day can watch as the Mayor of Munich officially opens the festivities by ringing a huge bell.
Enjoy the atmosphere -- and a nice, cold beverage -- in the buzzing beer halls, or wander market stalls to sample German treats such as pretzels, wurst, sauerkraut or pork knuckle. If you want to truly immerse yourself in Bavarian culture, consider dressing up in a Dirndl or Lederhosen. Just outside the festival's grounds, you'll find many of Munich's most popular shops, sights and attractions. Trips that visit Munich usually stop in other German cities or neighboring countries.
