Day 1 - Welcome to Quito, Ecuador
Upon arrival at the airport, you’ll be warmly greeted and escorted by private car to Casa Gangotena. Situated on Plaza San Francisco in the historic heart of this World Heritage city, our intimate and luxurious property is the finest boutique hotel in Quito.
Day 2 - Onward to Mashpi Lodge
After breakfast, you’ll embark on a scenic morning journey that takes you from the capital through picturesque mountain valleys and dry forest. As you continue along the western slopes of the Andes, you’ll journey through verdant Cloud Forest and cross the equator. A stop en route allows you to explore ancient ruins of the Yumbo culture, a civilization the thrived before the arrival of the Inca and the Spanish. Savor a morning snack of coffee and a traditional Ecuadorean empanada before continuing to the 5-star Mashpi Lodge, set on a plateau surrounded by vast tracts of lush cloud forest.

Upon arrival, an enlightening briefing from our Lodge staff introduces you to the cloud forest and its conservation. After lunch, you’ll have a bit of time to rest and refresh in your room before a 2-hour naturalist-guided walk along the Napa Trail. This trail is ideal for bird-watching and offers a chance to observe and learn about the region’s indigenous flora and fauna including the iron-wood palm tree, prized for its durable wood. This evening, you’ll enjoy a congenial dinner with your fellow Lodge guests and another informative lecture from our staff naturalists.

Your accommodations for the next two nights here at Mashpi will be in a spacious and stylishly appointed guestroom. At one end of your room, a dramatic floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall window is just a few feet away from the lush vegetation of the forest. (B+L+D)
Day 3 - Another Day in the Cloud Forest
Early risers can join our sharp-eyed naturalists on the terrace for some coffee, tea or hot chocolate. This early hour is a great time to use the telescope for up-close observation of the many colorful bird species that inhabit the forests surrounding our lodge.

After breakfast, this morning’s included activity features the Lodge’s unique Sky Bike, which allows you to ride across a sturdy steel cable that been suspended between two towering trees across a deep river gorge. It’s a fun and exciting way to experience the silent beauty of the forest. Nearby, the Mashpi Observation Tower puts you 100 feet above the shadowy forest floor. Here in the canopy, you’ll have a chance to see and learn about the many resident species that account for 70% of the forest’s overall biodiversity. There are 162 steps to reach the top of the Tower, but the ascent is well-rewarded. Your return to the Lodge is greeted with cooling towels and refreshing natural juices.

In the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a guided nature hike along Howler Monkeys Trail – aptly named for the primates which you might have a chance to observe. En route to the Mashpi Life Center, our expert naturalist will continue to deepen your appreciation and understanding of this unique eco-system. The Life Center itself offers a chance to observe and learn more about the indigenous creatures that inhabit the cloud forest – including butterflies, birds and small mammals

This evening before dinner, you’ll join our naturalist for a thrilling night safari. Learn about the nocturnal denizens of the cloud forest as you walk with flashlights and listen to the calls, croaks and hums of the night birds, frogs and insects. Turning off your flashlight, you might observe the glowing eyes of forest insects and the soft glow of bio-luminescent fungi. After this exciting expedition, you’ll return to the Lodge for another congenial dinner. (B+L+D)
Day 4 - Back to Quito
Early-risers can join our naturalist for a morning birdwatching expedition that lasts about an hour. After breakfast, a guided hike deep into the forest brings you to the beautiful Copal Waterfall, surrounded by towering trees and lush vegetation. Return to the Lodge for a final lunch before your included afternoon transfer back to the capital. Depending upon traffic and road conditions, you should be back in Quito around 4:00 or 5:00 PM. (B+L)
