Day 1 Welcome to Tuscany
Event begins: 3:00 PM, Toscana Resort Castelfalfi. Transfers are included from Pisa International Airport Galileo Galilei, Florence Airport Peretola, or Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station to Toscana Resort Castelfalfi in Montaione. Whether you arrive in Florence or Pisa, we'll be there to pick you up and bring you to the Toscana Resort Castelfalfi, located in the picturesque hamlet of Montaione, for your memorable stay under the Tuscan sun. Learn about the noble families of the Tuscan City States you will explore this week from Art Historian Elaine Ruffulo during an afternoon lecture, before joining us for a special welcome reception on the terrace of a medieval castle, followed by an intimate dinner in a private dining room. Day 2 Etruscan Volterra, City of Alabaster
Join us for a road trip over rolling hills to Etruscan Volterra, "City of Alabaster." Dating back to the 4th century, this former Tuscan stronghold was transformed under the Romans and fell to Florence during the Renaissance. Join an expert local guide for a walking tour that showcases the temple walls of its Acropolis, the Medici Fortress, and the artistry of alabaster craftsmen whose exquisite sculpted works brought worldwide fame to this hilltop gem. You will have free time to explore as you wish, perhaps people watching, un caffè in hand. This afternoon, wine and olive oil tasting are on the menu as you enjoy insider access to the wine cellar and olive groves at Tenuta di Castelfalfi and a sampling of their estate specialties. Dinner tonight is your choice at one of the resort's three exceptional restaurants. (B, D)
Day 3 Siena, Banking on Traditions
Travel to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Siena today for a guided walking tour with a local guide on the hilly cobblestone streets of a town steeped in traditions that date back centuries. See the Duomo and the Baptistery and learn the history behind the 17 colorful, flag-lined contrade (districts) that are so much a part of the fabric of life here during an exclusive presentation by Dario Castagna in his contrada. An expert on il Palio, the famous biannual horse race that began in the Middle Ages and is still run at the Piazza del Campo today, Dario will share insights on the lasting loyalties vivdly displayed by each contrada during the Palio. As a special treat, enjoy a lunch prepared and served by the members of the contrada, experiencing an authentic taste of their hospitality. Enjoy a choice of visits this afternoon that celebrate Siena's priceless treasures, from the famous frescoes in the Civic Museum to a visit inside the Baptistery. Dinner tonight will be a highlight of your stay in Tuscany when the acclaimed author France Mayes personally shares stories of her best selling books and personal experiences under the Tuscan Sun! Day 4 Chianti Country - A Day with the Corsini Family
Experience a privileged look at life on a 14th-century estate built for nobility in Chianti country, renowned for its wines, olive oil, and priceless family treasures. Villa Le Corti is home to the Corsini family, whose legacy as one of the oldest families in Florence includes ties to the Vatican - Pope Clement XII, born Lorenzo Corsini, was Pope from July 1730 to his death in 1740. Enjoy the estate as the nobles do with a personal welcome and a ride in a vintage Fiat 500; an insider tour and tasting of their prized Chianti Classico in their historic wine cellar, carved out under the villa and its gardens; a guided look at the oil mill and the orciaia where their extra virgin olive oil is stored; and a rustic Italian lunch specially prepared with local ingredients and farm fresh fare. Day 5 Medieval san Gimignano, Towering with History
Travel to the UNESCO World Heritage City of San Gimignano, boasting a skyline of "vanity" towers that reflect its medieval roots. Once numbering 72 and owned by individual noble, often feuding, families that lived inside and had their own private armies to protect their interests, now there are just 14 towers standing guard over the walled city. Your visit here takes you inside one of these historic tower homes, completely intact to reveal how the family lived, on a guided walking tour of this charmingly preserved Tuscan town. Back at your hilltop resort, take a cooking class that rewards with local culinary secrets and take home recipes. This evening savor a menu of regional delights during dinner at the Museo Piaggio, exclusively open for Tauck guests amidst a collection of Vespas. (B, D)
Day 6 Journey Home
Event ends: Toscana Resort Castelfalfi. Fly home anytime; transfers are included from Toscana Resort Castelfalfi in Montaione to Pisa International Airport Galileo Galilei, Florence Airport Peretola, or Firenze Santa Maria Novella railway station. Allow a minimum of three hours for flight check-in at the airport. (B)
